About Kevin Mahoney, CFP®
Hi, I'm Kevin Mahoney. I'm a financial advisor in Washington, DC, and the founder & CEO of Illumint. In 2017, I launched Illumint to specifically offer financial planning for Millennials. In doing so, I specialize in helping other parents navigate one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives, including 529 plans, merit aid, and other tuition discounts. As a fiduciary and an advocate for our generation’s most pressing financial issues, I also work with employers and brands on a variety of Millennial-driven personal finance events and projects, including speaking engagements, financial wellness programs, and sponsored campaigns. Organizations such as George Washington University, Nestle, General Assembly, WeWork, and Johns Hopkins University have partnered with me to provide relevant, nonjudgmental personal finance knowledge to their Millennial audiences.
My work as a Certified Financial Planner™ draws on my finance experience in the professional sports and commercial real estate industries. My decision to transition to a personal financial advisor in Washington, DC, though, stems from my and my wife’s experience preparing financially for their our child. Around this time, I noticed that young couples like us lacked good options for receiving financial advice specific to our stage in life. Traditional financial planning, with an almost exclusive focus on investing, wouldn’t help sufficiently with our goals in life. Millennials need more fee-only advisors who can discuss the benefits of renting, the cost of raising children, and the new ways in which parents are thinking about college tuition.
I enjoy sharing my perspective on personal finance with other Millennials, so I regularly serve as a resource for journalists. I've provided insight to national publications such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Newsweek, Time, and CNBC. I've also written for Yahoo! Finance, Fatherly, Kiplinger, and Forbes.
I hold an undergraduate business degree from Georgetown University and an MBA in finance from Georgia Tech. I'm both proud and humbled to say that Investopedia identified me as one of the top 100 financial advisors in the country. And Business Insider named me one of the "best financial advisors for Millennials" in the U.S. I'm a member of the XY Planning Network, Fee-Only Network, Advisor Growth Community, and National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). Last but certainly not least, I'm the father of two young kids, who only care if I play sports with them after school.

About ILLUMINT
Illumint offers fee-only financial planning specifically for Millennial parents. As the company's founder & CEO, I help my peers navigate the new financial decisions that arise during our 30s and early 40s as we try to save for college, repay student loans, buy a house, and invest our savings. Illumint is located in Washington, D.C., but operates virtually in order to work with Millennials across the U.S.Investment Philosophy
I take a passive, time-tested, research-based approach to investing. I'll never pretend that I (or anyone else) can consistently pick specific companies or industries who will outperform others. Instead, we maximize your diversification, minimize your costs, and align your investment risk with the timing of when you plan to use the money. Ultimately, then, your returns are based on what the global stock market offers. Over time, as different companies in the U.S. and abroad grow, you'll be in a position to build your wealth.
Values
✅ YOU SHOULD SPEND MONEY NOW WITHOUT GUILT
Not all of it, of course. But money is only a means to an end. In order to make the most of your life at every age, you need to spend the money that you earn.
✅ YOUR TIME IS MORE VALUABLE THAN MONEY
You see your kids growing up fast. Using your money to gain control of your time is the most powerful way to take full advantage of life's fleeting moments.
✅ RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS ARE OVERRATED
Saving money for your much older self is important. However, you also need to invest in more flexible accounts that you can access throughout your life.
✅ YOUR CHILD NEEDS A COLLEGE TUITION LIMIT
Expensive brand-name colleges don't lead to more life satisfaction or higher earnings. Minimizing student loan debt is one of the best ways to ensure that your child thrives.

Wealthtender® is a trusted, independent financial directory and educational resource governed by our strict Editorial Policy, Integrity Standards, and Terms of Use. We Want Your Voice to be Heard
Wealthtender exists to help people discover trusted and authentic financial professionals and educators who may be a good fit based on their unique needs and circumstances.
Your honest reviews help people decide which financial professionals and educators may be best suited to their individual needs.
The majority of people trust reviews as much as personal recommendations, so what you write in your review should reflect your own opinion and experience.
Tips for Writing a Helpful Review
Be descriptive. Instead of just saying what you like or dislike, share why. What have you enjoyed most or least about your experience with the provider? Have they helped you overcome a difficult financial challenge or strengthened your knowledge about particular money matters? The more details, the better!
Be honest. Your rating and review should reflect your actual experience.
Stay relevant. Ensure your review is helpful to others by avoiding off-topic discussions or personal opinions not relevant to your direct experience.
Make your review easy to read. Reviews should be readable to others. Use proper grammar, avoid excessive capitalization or punctuation, and be sure to check your spelling.
Be yourself. Don’t post as, or pretend to be, someone else, and do not say you’re associated with a person or organization with which you are not.
Be nice. Don’t write abusive, hateful, threatening, or harassing content. Avoid personal threats, hate speech, obscenities, or inflammatory language.
Respect the privacy of others. Don’t post information that can be used to identify another individual or compromise their privacy.
Report abuse. Thank you for helping us ensure reviews on Wealthtender are helpful to everyone. If you suspect possible violations of our guidelines or believe a review is inappropriate, please email [email protected] with a link to the provider’s profile, indicating the review in question and the reason you believe it violates our guidelines.
